India’s upcoming multi-format tour of New Zealand is shaping up to be an important selection challenge, with the senior selection committee expected to finalise four squads in the coming days.
The panel, led by interim chief selector Pragyan Ojha, is set to pick squads for the T20Is, ODIs, Tests and India A. The tour begins with the first T20I on October 22, while the Test series is scheduled to start in Wellington on November 19.
India A Matches Offer Red-Ball Preparation
A major discussion for the selectors will be how to give Test regulars enough red-ball exposure without weakening India’s white-ball squads.
India A are scheduled to play three four-day matches in Christchurch from October 24. Several Test players could feature in at least one of these games before joining the senior teams.
Players such as KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan are among those expected to benefit from match practice in New Zealand conditions. Ishan Kishan is also reportedly back in discussions for red-ball cricket.
Bumrah’s Workload a Key Concern
Jasprit Bumrah’s workload and fitness are another major issue for the selectors. The team management wants the fast bowler to build up his workload before the Wellington Test, although involving him in an India A match could affect India’s ODI plans.
The fast-bowling options are also expected to generate debate, with Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep and others competing for Test spots.
A Busy Tour Ahead
India’s New Zealand assignment will include five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests, making squad management particularly important. The selectors will have to balance player workload, injuries and the need for specialist red-ball preparation.
For India’s Test regulars, the India A fixtures could provide valuable time in New Zealand conditions before the longer format takes centre stage in November.
