Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has clarified his controversial remarks about not being able to feel “peace” in India after the comments triggered criticism on social media.
Dutt said the remarks were made during a scripted, light-hearted conversation and that he never intended to hurt or disrespect any individual, community or institution.
What Did Sanjay Dutt Say?
Dutt made the comments during an appearance on Shekhar Suman’s show Shekhar Tonite for a Gandhi Jayanti special.
While discussing India, the actor praised Indians for being welcoming and large-hearted but said he could no longer feel the same sense of peace in the country. The statement subsequently attracted considerable attention online.
Dutt Says It Was a Scripted Conversation
Following the backlash, Dutt issued a clarification saying his words were part of a scripted exchange intended to be humorous.
He explained that the segment drew on the kind of humour and satire associated with his iconic Munna Bhai character, particularly the idea of “Gandhigiri”.
According to Dutt, the intended message was one of love, togetherness, warmth and goodwill, rather than criticism or disrespect.
Munna Bhai Returns for a Political Satire
During the programme, Dutt also imagined himself as the Prime Minister for five minutes and adopted his familiar Munna Bhai style.
His fictional speech included comments about staying in India rather than travelling abroad and references to connecting with ordinary citizens. The segment was presented as satire rather than an actual political statement.
Why Did the Remark Spark Controversy?
The line about not feeling peace in India circulated widely online, with parts of the conversation being discussed separately from the show’s scripted context.
Dutt’s clarification appears aimed at explaining that the comments were intended as part of a humorous performance rather than a statement meant to offend or target anyone.
Sanjay Dutt’s Message
The actor has now stressed that his intention was not to disrespect anyone. By linking his remarks to Munna Bhai and “Gandhigiri”, Dutt sought to emphasise the message of peace, goodwill and togetherness behind the performance.
