Tamil Nadu Bypolls: Madurantakam and Dharapuram Become Key Test for Vijay’s TVK

The upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly bypolls in Madurantakam and Dharapuram have emerged as an important political test for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Polling in the two reserved constituencies is scheduled for October 6, with counting set for October 9.

Why the Two Seats Matter

The bypolls were triggered after AIADMK MLAs K Maragatham Kumaravel and P Sathyabama resigned from the Assembly and subsequently joined Vijay’s TVK. The party has now fielded both former MLAs again Kumaravel from Madurantakam and Sathyabama from Dharapuram.

For TVK, winning the two seats would strengthen its position in the Assembly and provide an early political boost to Vijay’s newly formed government. The contests are also being watched as a test of whether voters will endorse the two legislators’ switch from AIADMK to the ruling party.

Vijay Leads an Intensive Campaign

Vijay has personally invested considerable time in the bypoll campaign, an unusual level of attention for contests involving just two Assembly seats. He held rallies as well as roadshows, including a long roadshow covering more than 30 villages in Madurantakam.

He also concluded the campaign in Dharapuram with another major roadshow on October 4. The intensive campaigning underlines the importance TVK attaches to the two constituencies.

Three-Cornered Contest With Wider Stakes

The contests feature candidates from TVK, DMK, AIADMK and other parties, making the outcome difficult to predict. The DMK and AIADMK are seeking to use the bypolls to challenge the ruling party and regain political ground.

Dharapuram is particularly significant because it has traditionally been an AIADMK stronghold. In the 2026 Assembly election, AIADMK led the constituency with 40.56% of the vote, while DMK polled 32.20% and TVK finished third with 23.23%.

A Test of Vijay’s Political Momentum

Beyond the two constituencies, the bypoll results could offer an early indication of public sentiment toward the TVK government. A strong performance would allow Vijay to demonstrate that the party can convert its electoral momentum into support at the constituency level.

For the opposition, however, the polls offer an opportunity to question the ruling party over the defections that led to the vacancies and challenge TVK’s growing political influence.

With campaigning now over, voters in Madurantakam and Dharapuram will decide whether Vijay’s party can retain the seats through its new candidates or whether AIADMK and DMK can reclaim the political advantage.
