Indian football is heading into a new chapter as the Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 season is set to begin on October 10 and continue until May 2027. The upcoming campaign will bring back the traditional home-and-away format while introducing a stronger club-led structure.
A Longer Season Returns
The new ISL season will feature 13 teams and 163 matches, creating a much longer competition than the shortened campaign of the previous season. Clubs will play each other at home and away, giving teams more opportunities to build momentum and giving supporters more chances to watch their sides on home turf.
The return of the double round-robin format is expected to make consistency more important. A strong run over several months could prove decisive in the race for the league’s top position.
Two Trophies, Two Different Battles
The league stage and playoffs will once again create separate targets for the teams.
The side finishing first in the league standings will lift the ISL Shield and be recognised as the official league champion, while the top six will advance to the playoffs to compete for the ISL Cup.
That means clubs
will have to balance the demands of a long league campaign with the pressure of the knockout rounds.
A New Club-Led Era
One of the biggest changes is happening away from the pitch. The 2026-27 campaign marks the beginning of a club-led model, with participating clubs taking a greater role in commercial rights and decisions concerning the league’s direction. New Faces and Unfinished Questions
The new season will also feature changes among the participating clubs. Churchill Brothers are set to enter the competition through the Jamshedpur FC licence, although their participation remains subject to regulatory approval.
Meanwhile, promoted Diamond Harbour FC will not take up its ISL place after failing to fulfil the required administrative conditions.
