Karnataka Sting Video Controversy Puts Congress Leadership Under Scrutiny

A controversy surrounding a purported sting-operation video involving former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has triggered fresh political exchanges between the Congress government and opposition leaders. Union Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H. D. Kumaraswamy has used the dispute to question the handling of the investigation, while allegations involving people linked to both Congress and JD(S) remain under scrutiny.

The controversy has created a difficult situation for the Congress leadership, particularly as Siddaramaiah has alleged that the video was fabricated to damage his reputation. He has filed a police complaint seeking an investigation into who created and circulated the material.

Siddaramaiah Seeks Investigation Into Purported Video

Siddaramaiah has denied the allegations associated with the video and claimed that it was being used to defame and blackmail him. He has also approached the court to seek restrictions on its circulation.

His son, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, has publicly raised concerns about the possible involvement of people within the Congress organisation. Siddaramaiah has named Congress worker Krupa Alva and Power TV owner Rakesh Shetty in connection with the alleged operation. These claims have not been established as facts, and the investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the recording and its subsequent release.

The timing of the video’s circulation has also become a central question. Reports indicate that the recording may have been made in 2023 but became publicly prominent in 2026. Investigators will need to establish how the video was produced, who distributed it and whether any unlawful activity took place.

Kumaraswamy Questions the Police Probe

Kumaraswamy has emerged as a prominent critic of the Congress government’s handling of the case. He previously staged a protest outside the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner’s office, demanding that investigators question him directly rather than target JD(S) workers.

The Union Minister alleged that party workers were being unfairly targeted and called for an impartial investigation. The Congress government and police investigation have faced questions over the involvement of individuals associated with different political groups.

Kumaraswamy later asked his social media and party workers to cooperate with investigators when summoned. This marked a shift from his earlier objections to the questioning of JD(S)-linked individuals.

The investigation has therefore become a source of political tension for both the ruling party and the opposition. However, the involvement of any individual in wrongdoing must be determined through evidence and due process rather than political allegations.

Internal Congress Tensions Add to the Controversy

The dispute has also drawn attention to relations between Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. Both are senior Congress leaders, and the allegations have raised questions about internal trust within the party.

Kumaraswamy has suggested that the controversy is connected to the rivalry between the two Congress leaders. The claims have added another layer to the political debate, but no verified evidence presented in the cited reports establishes that Shivakumar orchestrated the alleged operation.

For Congress, the immediate challenge is to address Siddaramaiah’s demand for a transparent investigation while responding to opposition criticism. The party’s handling of the matter may also influence public discussion about accountability and internal coordination within the state government.

Investigation Remains Central to the Political Debate

The case has expanded beyond a dispute over a video, becoming a wider argument about political accountability, alleged misinformation and the use of investigative agencies in state politics.

Police inquiries into the video’s production and distribution remain crucial to establishing what happened. Until the evidence is examined and the investigation reaches substantiated conclusions, claims made by political leaders should be treated as allegations rather than proven findings.

As the inquiry continues, the controversy is likely to remain a significant issue in Karnataka’s political debate, with Congress and opposition leaders continuing to question each other’s conduct and motives.
