The INDIA bloc is set to organise a symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi on October 30, intensifying its campaign over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and claims of vote theft. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will chair the proceedings, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will introduce the motion and Rahul Gandhi will deliver the concluding remarks.
1. INDIA Bloc Finalises Public Impeachment Programme
Opposition leaders have finalised the arrangements for the programme, which will take place at Kharge’s residence at 10 Rajaji Marg in New Delhi from 3:30 pm. The event is being organised as a symbolic protest against the Election Commission’s handling of electoral roll revisions.
The INDIA bloc initially considered holding a mock Parliament session but subsequently changed the format to a public impeachment-style programme.
2. Meira Kumar to Preside Over the Proceedings
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has been selected to chair the proceedings. Her role will involve presiding over the symbolic exercise as opposition leaders present their concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission.
The programme is expected to bring together representatives of several opposition parties and people who claim to have been affected by changes to electoral rolls.
3. Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to Take Key Roles
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will move the proposed motion against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will deliver the concluding remarks before the motion is put forward for adoption.
Other INDIA bloc representatives are also expected to participate, with each party getting an opportunity to present its position.
4. Opposition Raises Concerns Over SIR and Vote Theft
The protest centres on allegations of irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Congress and its opposition partners have questioned the deletion of voters’ names and demanded greater transparency in the revision process.
The opposition has accused the CEC of failing to address its concerns and has called for his resignation. These allegations have been rejected as claims made by political opponents and remain part of the wider dispute over electoral processes.
5. Several Opposition Leaders Participate in Preparations
A meeting was held at Kharge’s residence on October 29 to finalise the programme. Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal attended alongside Meira Kumar.
Representatives from other INDIA bloc parties, including the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and CPI(M), also participated in the discussions.
6. November 1 Rally to Continue Opposition Campaign
The symbolic proceedings are part of a wider opposition campaign against alleged electoral irregularities. The INDIA bloc is also preparing for a major rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1.
Congress leaders are coordinating with state units to mobilise party workers and supporters for the demonstration. The alliance intends to use the rally to highlight its concerns over voter-list revisions and electoral transparency.
7. Electoral Transparency Remains Central to Political Debate
The October 30 programme is expected to bring the opposition’s concerns over electoral administration into sharper public focus. Through the symbolic proceedings, INDIA bloc leaders aim to present their allegations and seek wider public attention on the SIR exercise.
The November 1 rally will provide another platform for opposition parties to raise their demands, keeping the Election Commission and electoral transparency at the centre of the political debate.
