Japan Emerges as a Favourite Among Indian Travellers as Overseas Travel Trends Shift

Japan is gaining popularity among Indian travellers, with visitor numbers from India reportedly almost doubling every year, according to Zubin Karkaria, founder and CEO of VFS Global. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026 in New Delhi, he discussed changing travel preferences and the growing interest in international holidays.

Karkaria said Indian travellers are becoming more experienced and increasingly choosing destinations based on affordability, culture and personal interests.

Japan Sees Growing Interest from India

Japan has emerged as a fast-growing destination for Indian tourists. Karkaria attributed its rising appeal partly to improved affordability compared with five years ago.

The country’s blend of traditional culture, modern cities, distinctive cuisine and scenic landscapes offers a range of experiences for visitors. Its popularity also reflects a broader interest among Indian travellers in exploring destinations beyond traditional holiday choices.

Travellers Are Choosing More Personalised Experiences

Travel preferences often change as people gain international experience. According to Karkaria, first-time travellers may prefer organised tours that cover several destinations in a single trip.

More experienced travellers, however, increasingly plan holidays around specific interests such as food, art and culture. This approach allows them to explore destinations in greater depth instead of rushing between multiple locations.

International Travel Continues to Evolve

Karkaria also highlighted the resilience of the global travel industry despite challenges such as pandemics and geopolitical tensions. Rising disposable incomes and changing consumer preferences are helping shape travel decisions.

At the same time, technology and artificial intelligence could make parts of the journey smoother. Digital systems and biometric checks are expected to simplify some airport procedures, although governments will continue to control border entry and visa decisions.

What This Means for Indian Holidaymakers

Japan’s growing popularity signals an expanding range of international options for Indian tourists. Travellers planning a visit should consider visa requirements, flight costs, seasonal weather and accommodation availability before booking.

As travel becomes more experience-driven, destinations that combine culture, food and distinctive local experiences are likely to remain attractive to Indian holidaymakers.
