Khadi is getting a contemporary makeover as designer Amritha Ram continues to explore how India’s iconic handwoven fabric can connect with modern global fashion. Her latest work for KH House of Khadar moves beyond traditional perceptions of khadi and experiments with new textures, silhouettes and materials.
Khadi Beyond Traditional Designs
For Amritha Ram, khadi is not restricted to a particular look or aesthetic. The designer approaches the fabric as a versatile canvas that can be shaped according to the creative idea behind a collection.
This approach allows KH House of Khadar to present khadi in styles that feel contemporary while retaining its handcrafted character.
Sutura Brings a Modern Fashion Language
The latest collection, Sutura, explores undyed khadi in its natural shade alongside khadi denim and vegetable leather. Instead of relying heavily on conventional silhouettes, the collection focuses on wearable designs that sit somewhere between couture and streetwear.
The collection was also showcased at the Runway Seven Fashion Awards in New York, where KH House of Khadar received the Best Ready-to-Wear Collection award.
Sustainability Remains Important
Sustainability continues to influence the label’s design direction. The brand has experimented with organic dyes and different fabric combinations, including tencel and potential sustainable lycra blends.
These experiments reflect an effort to expand what khadi can do without losing its connection to responsible textile production.
From Paris to New York
KH House of Khadar has previously used international fashion platforms to challenge the conventional image of khadi. Its Paris presentation featured colour-blocked khadi created with organic dyes, while later collections explored more experimental combinations and contemporary styling.
What Comes Next for the Label
The label’s next creative direction is expected to explore Kutch embroidery. Amritha Ram is working on ways to combine the region’s embroidery traditions with the brand’s modern design language.
Her continued work across fashion and film also keeps her design practice connected to different forms of storytelling.
A New Identity for Khadi
With contemporary cuts, innovative fabric combinations and international showcases, KH House of Khadar is positioning khadi for audiences beyond its traditional market. Amritha Ram’s approach shows how an Indian textile can retain its identity while adapting to changing ideas of modern fashion.
