Food safety inspections across Telangana have uncovered major violations, including pest infestations, spoiled and contaminated food, poor hygiene, expired products and improper storage practices at dozens of establishments.
The Telangana Standards Authority for Food and Essential Drugs (TG SAFE) conducted special enforcement drives in recent days, inspecting restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops, hostels, messes and dhabas both in Hyderabad and in districts outside the core urban region.
In one major round, teams inspected around 67 establishments. Officials reported finding cockroach, housefly and rodent infestations, spoiled or contaminated meat and vegetables, fungal-affected food items, expired products, unclean refrigerators, poor waste disposal, inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items, and lapses in personal hygiene among food handlers.
Spoiled, rotten and pest-infested food was discarded on the spot. Authorities also collected dozens of food samples (including 35 in one coordinated drive) on suspicion of adulteration for laboratory analysis.
Several establishments faced immediate action. FSSAI licences of multiple outlets were suspended and they were ordered to stop operations in the interest of public health. Improvement notices and show-cause notices were issued to others, with instructions to rectify deficiencies. Follow-up inspections will check compliance.
Specific examples from recent drives include hostels and restaurants in areas such as Kukatpally, Banjara Hills and various districts where heavy cockroach infestations, rodent activity, expired items and unhygienic storage were documented. One hostel was found operating without a valid FSSAI licence or registration and was shut down

These enforcement actions form part of an ongoing crackdown by TG SAFE to improve food safety standards and protect public health. Officials have emphasised corrective measures alongside punitive action against serious or repeat violators.
