Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee brought the spirit of Diwali to New York’s iconic Metropolitan Museum of Art with a star-studded celebration on October 22. Actor Rani Mukerji, designer Masaba Gupta, actor Kal Penn and entrepreneur Anjula Acharia were among the guests at the gathering, which showcased Indian fashion, craftsmanship and festive traditions on an international stage.
Rani Mukerji’s Elegant Saree Look
Rani Mukerji opted for a lustrous grey satin saree paired with a sleeveless blouse. She completed the understated ensemble with oversized black glasses, a sparkling silver bag and minimal jewellery, creating a contemporary take on traditional festive dressing.
Masaba Gupta Adds a Modern Touch
Masaba Gupta brought a contemporary twist to Indian fashion with a white corset and a draped skirt-saree featuring a striking red border. A maroon Sabyasachi bag and a multi-coloured necklace added contrast to her outfit.
Sabyasachi himself chose a black bandhgala with white trousers, finishing the look with bright pink socks for a playful detail.
Indian Craftsmanship Takes Centre Stage
The celebration featured sarees, lehengas and the designer’s signature embellished long jackets. The outfits highlighted the variety of Indian festive fashion, blending traditional silhouettes with modern styling.
The décor also reflected the occasion’s grandeur, with dramatic floral arrangements, pomegranates, fresh produce and a lifelike peacock installation creating a rich, garden-inspired setting.
Diwali Meets New York’s Cultural Scene
The gathering brought Indian festive traditions into one of New York’s best-known cultural institutions. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has hosted Diwali programmes in previous years, but this private celebration put Sabyasachi’s distinctive fashion aesthetic and Indian craftsmanship in the spotlight.
The event also comes amid the designer’s growing international presence, including his recent return to New York Fashion Week and his collaboration with the museum on fine jewellery.
By combining celebrity style, festive décor and Indian design, Sabyasachi’s Diwali gathering offered a glimpse of how traditional fashion can connect with global audiences.
