Nepal is facing one of its worst flood disasters in decades after devastating flash floods struck the Nepal–Tibet border region on August 26, 2026.The disaster severely affected areas including Rasuwa and Nuwakot, with powerful floodwaters and debris destroying homes, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure. The flooding was linked to a glacier collapse in the Himalayan region, which sent a massive surge of water and debris through the Trishuli River valley. According to the latest reports, more than 1,300 people have died across Nepal and Tibet, while thousands remain missing. Rescue teams are continuing operations, particularly around hydropower tunnels where workers may still be trapped.

The disaster has also caused extensive damage to Nepal’s infrastructure, including homes, highways and hydropower projects. Relief teams are working to reach isolated communities and provide emergency assistance. The tragedy has renewed concerns about climate change, rapidly warming Himalayan glaciers and disaster preparedness. Nepal has also called for greater international support to help with recovery and climate-related losses.
