Navratri and Durga Puja 2026: How to Stay Hydrated During Garba and Pandal Hopping

Navratri and Durga Puja bring nights of Garba dancing, crowded pandals and festive outings. However, hours of dancing and walking, especially in warm conditions, can cause excessive sweating and fluid loss. Staying hydrated is essential to enjoying the celebrations while reducing the risk of dehydration.

1. Start Hydrating Before You Head Out

Do not wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. Begin drinking fluids throughout the day before leaving for a Garba venue or visiting Durga Puja pandals.

Dr Aditi Zota, a consultant pulmonologist and critical care specialist quoted by Hindustan Times, suggests that healthy adults can use around two to three litres of daily fluids as a general guide. Individual requirements vary depending on the weather, activity level and medical conditions.

2. Replace Lost Electrolytes

Heavy sweating causes the body to lose both water and electrolytes, including sodium. During prolonged dancing, drinks such as coconut water, lightly salted lemon water and buttermilk can help replenish fluids. An appropriate oral rehydration solution (ORS) may also be useful when needed.

The best option depends on how much fluid has been lost and an individual’s health needs.

3. Carry Water and Take Regular Breaks

Keep a water bottle with you and take regular sips throughout the evening. Avoid pushing through hours of continuous dancing without breaks.

If you begin feeling unusually tired, weak or dizzy, stop dancing, move somewhere cool and rest. Taking breaks can help your body recover from prolonged physical activity.

4. Choose Foods With High Water Content

Food can also contribute to daily fluid intake. Fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, oranges, cucumbers and pomegranates provide water and other nutrients.

If you are fasting during Navratri, plan your meals and fluids carefully so that you have enough energy for extended celebrations. Avoid relying entirely on sugary drinks to stay refreshed.

5. Rehydrate After the Celebrations

Hydration should continue after the last Garba song or a long evening of pandal hopping. Drink fluids comfortably, allow your body to cool down and get adequate rest.

People with kidney, heart or liver conditions, or those taking medicines that affect fluid balance, should follow their doctor’s advice on how much to drink and whether electrolyte replacement is appropriate.

6. Recognise Warning Signs of Dehydration

Headaches, thirst, weakness, dizziness and muscle cramps can be signs that your body needs attention. More serious symptoms, including confusion, fainting, a rapid heartbeat or very little urine, require prompt medical assessment.

Stop the activity and seek medical help if symptoms are severe or do not improve. Do not assume that extreme weakness or dizziness is simply the result of dancing for too long.

With regular hydration, sensible breaks and attention to warning signs, festival-goers can enjoy Navratri and Durga Puja more safely.
