The controversy surrounding a clash at a protest in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has intensified after social media influencer and activist Swatantra Bhardwaj was arrested in connection with an alleged assault on the father of a student protester.
Bhardwaj was detained by Delhi Police in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, before being brought to Delhi. A court subsequently sent him to one-day police custody as investigators continued examining the incident.
How the Jantar Mantar Dispute Escalated
The case relates to a protest held at Jantar Mantar in July by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). During the demonstration, Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad, was allegedly assaulted.
The incident gained wider attention after Bhardwaj discussed the confrontation publicly and made claims about striking the protester’s father. He later maintained that he had acted in self-defence, saying he feared he could have been attacked by the crowd.
The conflicting accounts have become a central part of the ongoing investigation.
Police Action Follows Growing Pressure
The arrest came after CJP representatives and supporters stepped up pressure on Delhi Police, including a demonstration outside the Parliament Street police station demanding action.
The case has also seen demands for stronger legal provisions. Reports indicate that additional provisions, including those under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, were added to the case amid the controversy.
A separate legal development involving alleged threats toward a minor has also been reported, adding another dimension to the investigation.
Political Attention Raises the Stakes
The incident has moved beyond a local protest dispute and entered the wider political conversation in Delhi. Opposition figures and political leaders have questioned the police response and demanded accountability.
Union Minister Chirag Paswan also spoke in support of the alleged victim, arguing that authorities should take firm action in cases involving violence against protesters.
The episode has therefore become another example of how incidents at politically sensitive demonstrations can quickly turn into larger debates over policing, protest rights and accountability.

With Bhardwaj in police custody, investigators are expected to examine witness accounts, available video footage and statements surrounding the confrontation.
