Congress Reviews Manipur Situation and Election Preparations in Meeting with Kharge, Rahul Gandhi

Senior Congress leaders from Manipur met party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on November 2 to discuss the state’s continuing security challenges and the party’s preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.

The meeting focused on the prolonged ethnic conflict, concerns over law and order, and the need to strengthen the Congress organisation ahead of the next electoral contest.

Manipur’s Security Situation Takes Centre Stage

During the meeting, Manipur Congress leaders raised concerns about continuing violence and insecurity in the state. They argued that lasting peace and normalcy had not yet been restored despite the prolonged crisis.

Congress Legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra said the discussions centred on the prevailing law and order situation and the difficulties faced by people affected by the unrest.

He emphasised that peace, security and stable governance should remain priorities for the state.

Senior Congress Leaders Participate in Discussions

The meeting was attended by several key party representatives, including Manipur Congress president O. Ibobi Singh, CLP leader Keisham Meghachandra and AICC in-charge of Manipur Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka.

The leaders discussed the political and organisational challenges facing the party in Manipur. The meeting also provided an opportunity to brief the national leadership on developments in the state and the concerns raised by local party workers.

Congress Begins Preparations for 2027 Assembly Elections

Alongside the discussion on security, the Congress leadership reviewed its preparations for the forthcoming Manipur Assembly elections.

The talks covered organisational readiness and the party’s strategy for the next electoral cycle. Strengthening the state unit and coordinating with local leaders are expected to remain important parts of its preparations.

The meeting indicates that the Congress is addressing the state’s immediate political and security concerns while also planning for the next Assembly contest.

Ethnic Conflict Continues to Affect Manipur

Manipur has faced prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023, when clashes broke out between the valley-based Meitei community and the hill-based Kuki community.

The conflict has resulted in hundreds of deaths and displaced thousands of people. More recently, tensions involving Kuki and Naga communities have also added to security concerns in parts of the state.

The continuing unrest has kept questions about public safety, reconciliation and the restoration of normal life at the centre of political discussions.

Congress Leaders Raise Manipur’s Concerns at Delhi Rally

Manipur Congress leaders had also participated in the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on November 1. Party representatives raised slogans of “Save Manipur” during the demonstration, according to a party functionary.

The rally was organised around opposition concerns over alleged electoral irregularities and voter-list revision. The participation of Manipur leaders also brought the state’s situation into the wider national political discussion.

Peace and Political Strategy Remain Key Priorities

The meeting between Manipur Congress leaders and the national leadership brought together two major priorities: addressing the state’s continuing unrest and preparing the party for the 2027 Assembly elections.

Congress leaders have called for peace, security and accountable governance, while also reviewing the organisational work needed ahead of the polls. The coming months will show how the party translates these discussions into its political and organisational activities in Manipur.
