New Delhi is set to take centre stage as India hosts the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12–13, 2026, at Bharat Mandapam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will welcome leaders of the expanded 11-member grouping as India concludes its year-long BRICS chairship. The summit theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on September 11 for bilateral talks with Modi and other engagements ahead of the main programme. Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to attend, marking his first visit to India in seven years. Other confirmed or expected leaders include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and representatives from the UAE and partner countries.

The two-day summit will focus on practical cooperation in food and energy security, healthcare, disaster resilience, critical supply chains, trade, investment, technology (including digital public infrastructure and AI), and strengthening multilateralism. Leaders are expected to adopt a New Delhi Declaration at the conclusion

Bilateral meetings on the sidelines, especially Modi’s talks with Putin and Xi, are being closely watched amid ongoing global tensions, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Middle East developments, and trade challenges.

BRICS now comprises 11 full members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The grouping represents a significant share of the world’s population and economy and positions itself as a platform for the Global South.

India assumed the BRICS chairship on 1 January 2026 (its fourth time after 2012, 2016 and 2021). The chairship has emphasised people-centric, practical outcomes across the four pillars of the theme.

The summit comes at a time of geopolitical flux and offers India an opportunity to advance cooperation while balancing relations with major partners. Official updates, livestream information and documents are available on the dedicated website brics2026.gov.in.
