Hyderabad and several districts across Telangana woke up to heavy rainfall on Monday, September 14, 2026, as the southwest monsoon regained momentum. The showers coincided with the beginning of Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) celebrations, bringing both relief from the heat and challenges in the form of waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
According to data from the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS/TDPS), Siddipet district recorded the highest rainfall in the state. Kondapak mandal topped the list with 145.3 mm, followed by Thipparam (Kukunoorpally) at 114.8 mm, Nangnoor at 109.3 mm, and Husnabad at 101.5 mm. Neighbouring Medak district also saw significant rain, with Chegunta recording 108 mm. Yadadri Bhuvanagiri and Karimnagar districts experienced heavy downpours as well.
Rainfall in Hyderabad and GHMC Areas
In the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) region, the maximum rainfall was recorded at:
Begumpet IMD Observatory (Balanagar): 95.5 mm
Gymkhana ESS, Tirumalagiri: 95.0 mm
Bowenpally Ward Office: 87.0 mm
Picket (Maredpally): 72.5 mm
Alwal (Telecom Colony): 70.8 mm
Areas such as Secunderabad, Bowenpally, Alwal, and surrounding zones witnessed intense showers, leading to waterlogging in low-lying localities. Commuters faced difficulties during the early morning hours as roads in several parts of the city turned into temporary pools.
The rains arrived overnight and continued into the morning, with intensity gradually reducing in north and central Hyderabad after 7 am while shifting eastward. Dense fog was also reported in many localities including Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Begumpet, Madhapur, Miyapur, LB Nagar, and Secunderabad during the early hours.
Impact on Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations
The heavy rain did not dampen the festive spirit entirely, but it did create challenges for devotees heading out for Ganesh idol installations and early morning rituals. Traffic police advised caution due to waterlogging and slow-moving traffic. Civic teams were deployed to clear waterlogged roads and restore normal movement.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has forecast continued light to moderate rain or thundershowers at several places across Telangana, including Hyderabad, on September 14 and 15. A yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (30-40 kmph) in many districts. Heavy rainfall is possible at isolated places in a large number of districts including Adilabad, Siddipet, Medak, Warangal, Karimnagar, and others.
