Man Returns to Chennai After 3 Years in Bengaluru, Notices Big Change in Outskirts

Returning to his hometown after nearly three years in Bengaluru has given Chennai-based entrepreneur Sai Ganesh a fresh perspective on how rapidly the city and its surrounding areas are changing.

Ganesh recently shared his observations in a LinkedIn post after moving back to Chennai. He said his time in Bengaluru changed the way he viewed his hometown, allowing him to notice developments that he might previously have overlooked.

Chennai Outskirts Look Different

Ganesh, who now works from a mango farmland on Chennai’s outskirts, said the areas outside the main city no longer feel like traditional outskirts.

He pointed to apartments appearing alongside farmland and industrial corridors developing close to residential communities. According to him, highways, logistics, manufacturing, ports, IT, healthcare, education and housing are increasingly becoming interconnected.

Bengaluru Changed His Perspective

His nearly three years in Bengaluru also shaped his understanding of how a technology-driven economy can transform an urban region.

Ganesh highlighted the role of startups, talent, migration, offices and housing demand in Bengaluru’s growth. After returning to Chennai, he began looking at the city through a similar long-term lens, while recognising that Chennai’s economic base is more diversified.

Chennai’s Growth Has Multiple Drivers

According to Ganesh, manufacturing, automobiles, electric vehicles, electronics, aerospace, IT, logistics, ports, agriculture and real estate are all contributing to the wider region’s development.

Rather than asking where Chennai stands today, he said he is more interested in imagining what the region could look like over the next 15 to 20 years.

A Different View of a Familiar City

Ganesh’s post has drawn attention because it captures a familiar experience: sometimes living in another city can change the way people see their own hometown.

For him, Bengaluru provided the perspective, while returning to Chennai has offered a closer view of a city undergoing its own transformation.
