The casting of Kalki 2898 AD 2 has been a major talking point among fans, particularly after Deepika Padukone’s exit from the franchise. Director Nag Ashwin has now offered a fresh update, saying the sequel will continue with the characters already established in the story.
No New Cast Additions, Says Nag Ashwin
Speaking about the sequel, Nag Ashwin was asked whether audiences could expect fresh additions to the cast. The filmmaker said there would be “no new additions”, explaining that the story already has several characters to explore.
The comment has added another layer to the discussion surrounding Deepika’s character, Sumathi, who played an important role in the first film.
Deepika Padukone Has Exited the Sequel
Deepika Padukone will not return for the second instalment. Vyjayanthi Movies announced in 2025 that it had parted ways with the actor after the two sides were unable to finalise a partnership for the sequel.
Her departure created speculation about whether another actor would take over the role of Sumathi.
Sumathi Remains Important to the Story
Sumathi, also known as SUM-80, was central to the first Kalki 2898 AD. Her character is connected to the larger mythology surrounding the birth of Kalki, making her role important to the franchise’s continuing storyline.
Earlier reports had linked other actors to the part, but several such reports remained unconfirmed.
Kalki 2 Moves Ahead
The sequel is already progressing, with Nag Ashwin previously revealing that limited shooting had taken place. More recently, he said regular shooting is expected to begin in October 2026 and could continue until mid-2027.
Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan Continue
The sequel is expected to continue with key members of the original cast, including Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. Bachchan and Kamal Haasan have already been involved in filming portions of the project.

With production moving towards a longer shooting schedule, more details about the cast and storyline are expected to emerge. For now, Nag Ashwin’s comments suggest that the sequel will build on the existing Kalki 2898 AD universe rather than introducing a large number of new characters.
