Lando Norris Backs Formula 1’s Return to India as Grand Prix Revival Gathers Pace

Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has expressed his desire to race in India, offering encouragement to efforts aimed at bringing the Indian Grand Prix back to the motorsport calendar. Norris believes India’s strong fan base could make a return beneficial for Formula 1.

Speaking ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix on October 8, the McLaren driver said he would welcome the opportunity to experience India and compete at its circuit.

Lando Norris Praises India’s F1 Fan Base

Norris acknowledged the popularity of Formula 1 among Indian fans and said he had previously driven the Buddh International Circuit virtually through racing simulators.

Although he has never visited India, the British driver expressed enthusiasm about travelling to the country and racing in front of its supporters.

India Explores Formula 1’s Return

India is exploring ways to revive the Grand Prix after the country hosted three Formula 1 races between 2011 and 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

The event was discontinued following financial difficulties and taxation-related complications. Renewed efforts now aim to address the challenges that prevented the race from continuing.

Buddh Circuit Could Be Central to Revival

The Buddh International Circuit remains central to discussions about bringing Formula 1 back to India. The circuit’s new owners, the Adani Group, have held discussions with Formula One Management about the possibility of hosting the event again.

However, significant investment and track upgrades may be necessary before the venue can host a modern Formula 1 race.

Financial Challenges Remain

Hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix involves substantial expenses, including annual hosting fees, infrastructure improvements and operational costs. These financial commitments could influence the timing and feasibility of India’s return.

Although Norris’s comments reflect enthusiasm for racing in India, they do not confirm that a Grand Prix has been scheduled.

Norris’s Connection With India

Norris also recalled his friendship with Indian racing driver Jehan Daruvala, with whom he competed during his junior racing career. Their connection adds a personal dimension to his interest in visiting India.

Daruvala’s experience in international motorsport has also helped bring attention to India’s participation in the global racing scene.

What Happens Next?

India’s potential return to Formula 1 will depend on negotiations, financial planning, circuit readiness and agreement with the sport’s organisers. Norris’s support highlights the opportunity to reconnect Formula 1 with its Indian audience, but concrete commitments are still needed.

For Indian motorsport fans, the prospect of seeing the world’s leading drivers compete at Buddh International Circuit again remains an exciting possibility.
