Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited Jagla village in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district on October 1 and met families whose children had died in recent months.
The visit came amid reports of more than 30 tribal children dying in the area since June or July, with authorities and reports citing illnesses including measles, malaria, respiratory problems, dehydration, malnutrition and anaemia among the reported causes.
Rahul Gandhi Meets Affected Families
Gandhi spent around an hour listening to families in the tribal-dominated area. Residents raised concerns about healthcare, education, employment and access to government welfare programmes.
After the meeting, Gandhi criticised the Centre and Madhya Pradesh government, saying it appeared that government support was absent in the remote tribal region. He said he would raise the concerns of the affected families in Parliament.
Focus on Healthcare and Child Deaths
Healthcare access was a major issue during Gandhi’s interaction with residents. Families reportedly spoke about difficulties in accessing medical facilities in remote villages.
The deaths have prompted a political debate over healthcare delivery and government support for tribal communities. Authorities have cited several possible medical causes, while affected families have raised concerns about inadequate access to hospitals and healthcare personnel.
Forest Rights and Rural Employment
Gandhi also raised issues involving land rights, Forest Rights Act claims and rural employment. He questioned whether eligible tribal families were receiving land titles and benefits under government schemes.
He also referred to the rural employment programme and welfare payments, arguing that eligible families should receive the benefits for which they qualify.
Compensation for Families
Compensation for families who lost children was another issue highlighted during the visit. Reports said the state had approved compensation for 32 deceased children, while Gandhi claimed that some affected families were still waiting for payments.
Political Debate Intensifies
The Balaghat deaths have become a political issue in Madhya Pradesh, with Congress leaders accusing the government of neglecting tribal communities. BJP leaders, meanwhile, have rejected the criticism and pointed to development efforts in the region.
The Balaghat episode is now likely to receive further attention as Gandhi has said he intends to raise the concerns of the affected tribal families in the Lok Sabha.
