India’s men’s cricket team has advanced to the semifinals of the Asian Games 2026 without a ball being bowled after persistent rain forced the quarterfinal against Afghanistan to be abandoned in Nagoya, Japan.
The match at Korogi Sports Park was called off without the toss, with the weather preventing any possibility of meaningful play. India progressed because of its higher position in the ICC T20I rankings.
India Move Into the Last Four
India entered the tournament as the defending Asian Games champions and were ranked No. 1 in the ICC T20I rankings. Afghanistan, meanwhile, were ranked 10th, meaning India had the advantage when the knockout match was washed out.
The result means India have secured a place in the semifinal without having to play their quarterfinal match.
Rain Disrupts Knockout Stage
Nagoya has experienced persistent rainfall in recent days, creating difficult conditions for the cricket competition.
The first men’s quarterfinal between Pakistan and Hong Kong was also abandoned because of rain. Pakistan advanced under the same ranking-based provision.
The weather has therefore had a significant impact on the early stages of the knockout competition.
Who Will India Face Next?
India are scheduled to face the winner of the quarterfinal between Nepal and Sri Lanka in the semifinal.
If that quarterfinal is also abandoned, Sri Lanka would advance because of its higher ranking and would meet India in the last four.

The Indian team arrived at the Asian Games looking to defend its cricket title. The abandoned quarterfinal means the team has moved one step closer to another medal without getting an opportunity to test itself in the knockout stage.
