Can You Drive From India to Europe? Routes, Documents and Costs to Know

For travellers who dream of a road trip rather than a flight, driving from India to Europe is possible but it is a far more complicated journey than a regular international holiday.

Depending on the route, the overland trip can cover around 15,000 km, pass through 15 to 20 countries and take six weeks or longer.

Routes From India to Europe

There is no single route. One option passes through Nepal, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia before entering Europe. Another can take travellers through Georgia and Türkiye before continuing towards Europe.

A second broad route goes through Pakistan, Iran and Türkiye, although border permissions and prevailing entry conditions must be checked before planning such a journey.

How Long Does the Journey Take?

A relatively direct journey to London can take roughly six weeks, while an itinerary designed around sightseeing can take much longer.

For example, some organised overland expeditions cover about 20 countries over nearly 70 days, allowing travellers to spend more time exploring destinations along the way.

What Documents Are Needed?

Documentation is one of the biggest challenges. Travellers need a valid passport, appropriate visas, an International Driving Permit (IDP) and vehicle-related customs paperwork.

India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways confirms that an IDP can be issued to eligible Indian licence holders through the relevant RTO.

For taking a personal vehicle across borders, travellers may also need a Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD), depending on the countries involved.

What About the Cost?

Fuel is only one part of the expense. A long India-to-Europe road trip can also involve international visas, accommodation, food, tolls, insurance, vehicle maintenance, permits and unexpected border delays.

The cost can rise significantly when travellers choose to stop and explore several countries instead of simply crossing them.

Is It Practical?

The journey is technically possible, but it requires extensive preparation. Border regulations, visa rules and geopolitical conditions can change, so travellers should verify current requirements and travel advisories before departure.

For adventurous travellers, however, the appeal lies in experiencing the gradual change in landscapes, languages, food and cultures across thousands of kilometres—making the journey itself part of the holiday.
