Telangana has recorded a 15% rainfall deficit during the 2026 southwest monsoon season up to September 27. According to data from the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), the state received 615.3 mm of rainfall against the normal of 726.7 mm.
Out of 33 districts, 16 remained in the deficient category, while only 17 managed to stay in the normal range. The shortfall has raised concerns for agriculture and water availability as the monsoon season draws to a close.

Most affected districts: Jogulamba Gadwal recorded the highest deficit at 39%, followed by Hanumakonda (34%), Nalgonda (32%), Warangal (31%), and Medchal-Malkajgiri (31%).
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and surrounding areas saw a sharper 24% deficit (456.6 mm against a normal of 604.7 mm).
IMD data for a slightly earlier period indicated an even higher deficit of around 20%.The monsoon remained largely weak throughout the season, with prolonged dry spells interrupted by limited rainfall events. A late spell reduced the deficit from higher levels earlier in September, but the overall performance stayed below normal.
Weather officials have indicated that no major rainfall spell is expected in the immediate period. The southwest monsoon has begun withdrawing from the state, and dry conditions with intense sunshine are likely in the coming days. Temperatures could rise further in October.
The deficient rainfall has affected kharif crops in several rain-fed areas. Farmers in districts with high shortfalls face challenges related to soil moisture and irrigation support. Reservoir levels and groundwater recharge may also come under pressure if the post-monsoon period remains dry.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have earlier prepared contingency plans for water management and crop support in deficit regions.
